I sat in Gulf Coast Exploreum’s presentation to the Mobile City Council seeking $400,000 from the city for this year’s budget, not one of you council members asked them why they were bleeding money and from where. Nope y’all just patted them on the back showing your support while it bleeds in the red. Pour more money into it, Mayor’! If they knew, they didn’t confess.

Publish the data. Compare it with Montgomery and Huntsville airports. One thing is clear, you don’t fly out of Mobile’s airport. And, we know where you fly from. Don’t you have an airport in Gulf Shores? When was it renovated and upgraded. Bottom line, you need us more than we need you. If you have a serious illness like cancer, are you not coming to Mobile. If you want a choice of fine dining are you not coming to Mobile. What about great televised sporting events? Mobile!!! Nightly entertainment m? Mobile!! Your city closes down at sundown. You left Mobile and now you are trying to convince others something is wrong with our great city. I will say this, if you have a decent job while living over there, then you must work in Mobile. I say move back home.

Fred,

Mobile Regional Airport has problems — no one flies out of there, if they can avoid it. I have the FAA data to back it up. This talk of Mobile being one of a few deepwater, train, truck and airport cities in the country is a false statement. A runway doesn’t make an airport and that’s why the city of perpetual potential has never taken off. With Cuba and the U.S. on there way to normalizing relations, there’s an OPPORTUNITY for the city and the state of Alabama to ship more products to Cuba by ship and/or by plane, if we build an airport and a cargo-handling facility.

You’re a city official of 18 years and if you don’t understand or are unaware of this old hurt that’s troublesome. Mobile has a lot of problems. This is just one of them. I’ve been working on this issue for a year, now. I’ve gotten only silence from Government Plaza and the mayor. Brookley Field is a wound that has never healed since its closing and when I put my petition online everyone started howling, in agreement. Mayor Arthur Outlaw should have moved the airport (1983) when he was in office now we have been living with this problem ever since. We live with a lot problems in Mobile until we forget that they exist. Once in a while the town fool will say something or do something that gets everyone excited. I guess I’m that fool or genius.

Sounds a lot like Mobile!

Subject: Re: Petition: Mayor Stimpson — Please move the Mobile Regional Airport (82 people have signed our petition!)

You just shifted your argument. New Orleans, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Pensacola all have something in common: Gambling. That industry subsidizes the airline industry to increase ridership. We have no gaming. If we did, airfares would drop immediately. But we will land Jet Blue in the near future, is my prediction. Again, you have no strategy to propose.

It is now clear you have not visited our Regional Airport recent because millions were spent on upgrading it. We have an Airport Authority that is guiding us into the future, not elected officials. We are in a supporting mode. The Mayor of New Orleans does not run their airport either. You have catching up to do. It is clear others are uninformed too.

Fred,

Mayor Landrieu of New Orleans is spending billions in upgrades in KENNER!! The point is that cities across America are spending big bucks on their airports, including Birmingham, for various reasons mostly with bonds. Our airport is and has been in the wrong location and hundreds of Mobilians know it and agree. (154 petitioners @ 3:52 pm) it’s growing one every few minutes. Your losing passengers to other airports.

Palmer Hamilton attorney, Jones Walker MOBILE, AL

“We are losing our Baldwin County neighbors to the Pensacola Airport. We’re the Mobile Airport located at Brookley, this key segment of area fliers would be able to use Mobile. This would result in a substantial lowering of airfares. I’ve been told by an airport developer that only 25 acres of Brookley would needed, and 80 percent of the cost would be federal. The local portion could be paid by the sale of most of the several thousand acres the City owns at Bates Field. It’s time for Mobile to think big again. This is eminently feasible.” — Palmer Hamilton

New Orleans Armstrong International Airport is in Kenner, LA, not New Orleans. Reagan/Washington International Airport is located in Arlington, VA and Washington Dulles International Airport is way down in Sterling, VA. The Dallas/Ft Worth International Airport is in Irving, Tx. The list goes on. Ted, since you are not living in our city or County, I suggest you present evidence to support your argument that the proximity of airports to downtown will increase revenue and/or economic development. List cities that built airports within the last five years and where they located them. Quote the federal agency that’s regulates airports. By the way, tell us which airport do you use, Pensacola or Mobile?
